Bury not getting carried away says boss Hogg
BURY St Edmunds coach Gavin Hogg is confident no-one at the club will be getting carried away despite maintaining their perfect start to the London One North campaign with a 35-0 victory away at promotion rivals Letchworth Garden City.
The win was The Haberden outfit’s fifth consecutive success to see them sit firmly at the top of the table.
Despite being delighted with his side’s start to the season, Hogg is keen to manage exceeding expectations as they prepare to welcome struggling Ruislip tomorrow (3pm), who suffered their third straight league defeat on Saturday, losing 34-19 to Diss.
“We set ourselves a target of remaining unbeaten until the end of September and thankfully we have done that,” he said. “Letchworth are a very physical side and we made hard work of it but I was pleased that the game plan ultimately worked.
“Ruislip are a funny side and we came unstuck there last season so we cannot underestimate them.
“We know they are a very physical team and so we will have to be fully focused to continue our run.
“The longer the run goes on, the harder it will become to remain unbeaten, but we are very confident of keeping it going for the time being.
“However, saying that, we are realistic and know we have to keep expectations down and work on certain things.
“We have a fantastic group here and the mindset is to keep on improving for the future.”
In Eastern Counties One, Thurston Rangers’ inconsistent start to the season continues.
The Robinson Field outfit failed to build on a narrow 15-13 victory over Harwich and Dovercourt a week previously as they slumped to a disappointing 38-9 defeat to Woodbridge at home on Saturday.
The second league defeat of the season leaves the club just one place off the bottom of the table and they face another difficult encounter tomorrow (3pm) when they entertain high flying West Norfolk, who enjoyed a 42-28 victory over Harwich.
Elsewhere, in Eastern Counties Two, Mildenhall and Red Lodge Eagles were denied the opportunity to bounce back from a 56-0 defeat to Haverhill and District a week previously after their encounter with Broadland-Great Yarmouth was postponed.
Tomorrow they are set to entertain second-placed Swaffham (3pm), who remain unbeaten.
Meanwhile, league rivals Thetford’s positive start to the season took a knock on Saturday following a 20-8 defeat away to Norwich Union.
Despite this, they still remain in third place and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they welcome Sawston at home tomorrow (3pm) who are yet to play this campaign following back-to-back postponements.
