DIVING IN: Casey-Jo Maggs bursts away from the starting blocks

MORE than 500 swimmers from 40 clubs converged on Abbeycroft Leisure Centre in Bury St Edmunds for the annual West Suffolk Open Meet, including 65 swimmers from the home club.

This would be the last chance for youngsters to gain qualifying times for the Regional Age Group Championships and, following West Suffolk’s recent success at the Regional Youth Championships, expectations were high.

West Suffolk’s swimmers did not disappoint, finishing with a medal tally of 27 gold, 31 silver and 25 bronze.

Special mention for overall performances go to 11-year-old Beth Edwards, who produced eight substantial personal best times (pbs) from eight swims.

Alex Proffitt, hot on older brother Danny’s heels, gained eight new pbs from his nine swims.

His training partner Charlie Eshelby swam seven new best times from 10 events, and newcomer Ben Wilkinson picked up five pbs of between five and 18 seconds from his six events.

Fresh from the Nemo squad, Emily Rawlings (10) produced two County Development qualifying times in her two swims, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

West Suffolk’s gold medallists from the weekend were: Tom Edwards, Beth Edwards, Tom Sarah, Charlie Eshelby, William Harpur-Davies, Molly Ollington, Daniel Orcutt, Chloe-Jeane Parsley, Claire Robinson, Myles Turner and Beth Wiseman.

The event was a great success for the club, due to enthusiasm of the swimmers, fantastic support of the West Suffolk parents and, in particular, the Friends in Swimming (FINS) group who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
