West Suffolk bag second in home meet
AFTER finishing last in the first two fixtures in the Southern Athletics League, West Suffolk took advantage of their home match by fielding far more athletes to take second place behind a strong Basildon team.
It was a dry but windy day which hindered a lot of performances, but conditions were good for sprinting and helped James Curran to a new personal best (pb) time in the 100 metres.
There were also good pbs for Montana Jackson in both 200 and 400 metres, and Maureen McCarthy and Michael Bartram in 800 and 1500 metres respectively.
Jake McCarthy and Mark Smith did well in triple jump as did Tania Spurling in both horizontal jumps. Athlete of the match was Montana Jackson for her pbs in difficult conditions.
The youngsters had much better conditions when they travelled to Braintree for the Eastern Young Athletes League.
The major disappointment was a lack of numbers in under-13s, and in the under-17 women’s age group. This is bound to affect the club’s ability to qualify for the end of season trophy final.
Nella Walters was again in sparkling form with pbs in both 200 and 800 metres.
There were plenty of pbs spread throughout the disciplines, but it was a particularly good day for high jump, in which under-15 Peggy-Mai Norman improved significantly as did both Stephen Block, who won the under-17 men’s event and Mark Smith competing as a non scorer.
Lawrence Taylor equalled the pb set in his previous competition to show good consistency.
The athlete of the match award went to Peggy-Mai Norman for her high jump performance.
The final results saw West Suffolk in fourth place of seven clubs, a good result considering the lack of numbers.
