TOUCHING MOMENT: Darren Gibbs presents daughter Connie with the Zenas Division winners trophy, named after Connies mother and Darrens partner Zena Butcher, who died from cancer seven years ago

THE presentation of the Zena’s Division trophy at West Suffolk Netball League’s awards evening is always a special moment as a member of Zena Butcher’s family hands the accolade to the best junior team in the area.

But this year provided an even more touching moment as Zena’s partner Darren Gibbs presented the trophy to daughter Connie, part of the winning Jetts team.

It is the first time Connie has held the trophy named in memory of her mother, who passed away seven years ago at the age of just 37 after a battle with cancer.

Connie was just a year old when Zena was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour and only seven when her mother died in June 2005.

Meanwhile, Moreton Hall A were presented with the Division One trophy for both the Summer League and the Winter League, but it was Cockfield’s Abi Bullett who took the division’s player-of-the-year accolade home with her.

Karen Ferguson, of Burwell, won the player-of-the-year award in Division Two, Stowmarket’s Saskia Walker and Thetford B’s Laura Flowers were tied in Division Three, Ellie Steggles won the Division Four award for her displays with Moreton Hall V, Walsham’s Vanessa Vigrass won the Division Five prize, while Cockfield II’s Lauren Gooch was the best Zena’s Division had to offer.

Serena Johnson (Moreton Hall) and Fiona Mulley (Jubilee A) were named the overall players of the year.

Kim Long won the umpire-of-the-year gong, Jetts added Zena’s Tournament to their Zena’s Division title, while the other Summer League champions were Burwell (Division Two), Stowmarket II (Division Three), Jetts B (Division Four) and Walsham (Division Five).

Jubilee A won Winter League Division Two, while Moreton Hall V were the Division Three champions during the winter.
