Tooley keeps her head to take 1,500m title
YOUNG Suffolk athletes produced brilliant displays at the 2012 English National Track and Field Championships.
Runner Sophie Tooley ended her track season with a superb victory in the girls’ under-15 1,500m.
Despite being in the bottom year of the age group and in sweltering conditions at the Bedford International Stadium, Tooley displayed maturity beyond her years.
The athlete sat at the back of the pack through the first 800m, which was reached in a modest 2mins 30secs.
Sensing the pace was about to step up, Tooley moved on to the shoulder of the leaders.
She held the position through the bell in 3.28.
With 270m to run, Tooley hit the front and showed her 800m pace by pulling away to win comfortably in 4.35.
A new personal best and club record.
Michael Bartram endured an eventful run in the mens’ under-17 steeplechase.
In eighth position midway through the final lap, the youngster mistimed his approach to a barrier and had to stop to regain his stride and speed.
This falter dropped him to 11th position, however he swiftly got himself back into the mix over the final 200m to finish eighth, just outside his personal best.
