School celebrates successful season

CULFORD School have had one of their most successful hockey seasons ever, with four of the teams making appearances at this year’s national finals.

The under-14 girls’ squad blitzed through the regional qualifying before playing the best teams in the country at Cannock Hockey Club, in February.

After an early victory and a well-fought draw against the eventual winners of the tournament, they were ranked the fifth in the country - missing out on a final spot by goal difference.

Culford boys’ under-14 side qualified for the national finals after dominating the regional rounds of the tournament, with wins over The Perse, Felsted and Framlingham.

They, too, battled hard for their results and were also ranked fifth in their age group.

The under-13 boys’ team produced some superb displays of hockey in the National IAPS competition, finishing eighth overall in the country.

To complete the quartet, the under-13 girls competed in the National finals last week, and, following a hectic day where they played five successive games, came away ranked 10th.

This success owes much to Culford Prep School PE teachers, Kerry Kemp and Richard Pineo, whose guidance has cemented the young players’ talents.

Pineo commented: “It has been a privilege to be a part of this success. Having four teams as National finalists is the start of something big at Culford.”

Culford have hockey scholarships being offered from September 2012 and a new hockey development programme under way directed by head of hockey, Matt Copping.

Stephen Dick, the school’s new hockey professional and former GB Olympian, believes this current success is a blueprint for the future: “The experience these players have gained will hold them in good stead for years to come.”
