Roper revved up for rally glory
MILDENHALL’S Lewis Roper will be targeting Rally GB National glory in Wales next month, as he takes to the track for the British stage of the 2012 World Rally Championships (WRC).
Round 10 of the 13-part world championship sees the start of the rally head to the seaside town of Llandudno in the north of Wales and finish in the capital Cardiff in the south three days later, taking in the gravel-based forest stages, for which it is famed for with undulating roads often made slippery by rainfall, ice and even snow.
As part of the three-day event, starting on Friday, September 14, a National B status event, in which Roper will be competing in, will be taking place offering amateur drivers the rare opportunity to compare their times with the world’s best professional drivers over nine timed special stages, including a special stage at Celtic Manor Resort, the venue of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
For the 28-year-old who has been rallying for the past five years, the opportunity to race his 2001 Nissan Micra alongside the main championship is something he is relishing.
“There is always a really good atmosphere at the big events and it will be amazing to be able to experience that,” he said.
“The main thing with an event like this is to allow amateur drivers the chance to be part of a bigger event.
“Not many people get the chance to race at event like this with huge crowds and it is a really great experience.
“It is definitely a step above normal club racing on a much bigger stage and hopefully we can have a clean run and make the most of it.”
