Roper battles some difficult conditions

MILDENHALL’S Lewis Roper put in a brave showing as the FIA World Rally Championship came to the UK earlier this month.

Roper, 28, competed in the National B status event as round 10 of the 13-part championship visited Llandudno in North Wales for a three-day competition on September 14.

Day one saw Roper and his Nissan Micra make good progress through the first two competitive special stages.

However, a double puncture to the left side of the car in stage three halted his good start and, despite help from a group of spectators in difficult conditions, 20 minutes were lost which all but ruled out a  podium finish. Roper finished the day 41st overall and fifth in class.

The following day Roper made significant ground in the standings, rising from last position to 36th place overall and fourth in class. In the process, he set the 15th fastest time over the third stage on the day.

Roper struggled at the start of day three, with his Micra’s tyres badly worn, but the Mildenhall driver performed well in the final two stages of the event, narrowly missing out on second place in the 1400 class.

He said: “It was a shame not to win our class this year as we were consistently fast and had some very good stage times, but the issues with the tyres on the first day just left us with too much work to do.

“We are now looking to compete in the Cambrian Rally on October 20 in Llandudno, North Wales, if we can get a sufficient budget together, and are aiming to compete in the British Rally Championship next year.”
