Pat and Ann’s national title bid
IXWORTH’S Pat Jennings and Ann Lilley are set to challenge for national honours next month after successfully defending their pairs title at the Suffolk County Women’s Bowls Association finals at the St Edmundsbury Bowls Club.
The pair had to overcome a tough encounter in the semi-finals, beating L.Nunn and J.Pitcher of Waldringfield 18-12, before coasting to a more comfortable 17-10 victory in the final against J. Squire and M. Rayner from Hales to successfully retain their pairs crown.
However, they fell marginally short of clinching double success as along with J. Ronchetti they slipped to an agonising 19-16 final defeat in the 2-Bowl Rinks competition, with Nunn and Pitcher along with V. Pryke, exacting their revenge to end as eventual winners.
The Ixworth trio were also unfortunate in the 3-Bowl Rinks event suffering a convincing 23-8 defeat in the semi-finals to eventual winners L. Alexander, T. Tasker and P Gooch of Sole Bay.
There was also semi-final disappointment for Stowmarket Rookery’s S. Plummer and J. Lambert in the senior pairs competition, who suffered a 17-13 defeat to eventual runner-ups J. Childs and M. Robinson of Yoxford.
The counties competitors didn’t fare much better in the singles discipline with beaten semi-finalists in the Secretaries Singles and Under-25s Singles.
In the Secretaries Singles, S. Dorling from Old Newton 2007 slumped to a narrow 21-19 defeat to eventual winner A. Lyas of Ipswich and District, while J. Warren of Stanton suffered a 21-12 defeat to runner-up A. Manser from Dennington.
The winners will go through to the National championships in Skegness in the week commencing August 29.
n Congratulations are due to Pat Jennings (Ixworth), Shirley Plummer (Stowmarket Rookery) and Sue Hender (Norbridge) who earned their “100” badges this season, having represented Suffolk County 100 times.
