Parry bounces back in dominant display
NEAR PERFECT DISPLAY: Matt Parry
BURY St Edmunds’ Matt Parry raced back into action in clinical form last weekend, clinching all but one point of a possible maximum in rounds nine and 11 of Dunlop InterSteps at Snetterton.
Following a lengthy scheduled break, The Fortec Motorsport driver’s 102 point haul also increased his lead in the championship standings to a commanding 53 points as the season reaches the halfway stage.
However despite his dominant performance the weekend started with Saturday morning’s qualifying session proving just how closely-matched the field can be, with Parry continually swapping places with Fortec team-mates Jack Aitken and Cameron Twynham, as well as Falcon Motorsport’s Liam Venter, before snatching pole position with his very last lap on each occasion.
And he made most of his position in the afternoon race, taking the chequered flag 10 seconds clear of eventual runner-up Venter after Aitken had spun off with four laps remaining when challenging Parry for the lead.
The AirAsia Caterham Driver Development Programme protégé then followed this up on Sunday with another strong showing, once again leading from the front to claim not only a new lap record to his name but, even despite a safety car reducing what would have been a greater winning margin, a full three second advantage over Aitken going into the final day.
The drivers were made to wait for the third race to get underway, but despite this, Parry was again in no mood to hang about, eventually claiming an eight second margin of victory, which along with the bonus for for his fastest lap, helped net him an incredible 102 points from a possible 103, with only title rival Matt Mason’s snatching of the race one fastest lap denying him a perfect weekend.
“You can’t get much closer than that,” Parry said of his weekend tally.
“I feel that I’ve really got a handle on this series now, and it’s beginning to show in the standings, as I’ve built a useful advantage at the halfway point of the season.
“However, it is only the halfway point, and I’m not going to be getting over-confident. Nothing has been decided yet.
“I’ll be looking to consolidate my performances over the rest of the season, and then look to put the skills I have developed into something quicker next season.”
The next three rounds of the Dunlop InterSteps Championship season take place at the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton, over the weekend of July 28.
