James shines in Edinburgh
MEDAL HAUL: James Morton
KUK Sool Won sensation James Morton was celebrating last week after competing in the Scottish Kuk Sool Won tournament in Edinburgh and picking up a big medal haul.
The 13-year-old 1st Degree Black Belt competed in the 13 to 17 year-old division as the youngest competitor in five disciplines: Sword Form, Staff Form, Empty Hand Form, Self Defence Techniques and Sparring.
He excelled and was awarded gold medals in three of the five divisions.
On top of his medal success the youngster was also awarded with the Youth 1st Dahn Grand Champion trophy at the end of the tournament, after amassing the most points throughout the competition.
This is the third 1st Dahn Black Belt Grand Champion title Morton has earned in a year. He is now the current Junior 1st Dahn European Grand Champion, Junior 1st Dahn Benelux Grand Champion, which he received while competing in Rotterdam, and now Scottish champion.
Morton, who received a Sports Excellence Grant from Forest Heath District Council last year and trains under Master Darren Hart, from the Lakenheath Kuk Sool Won School, will now look to achieve his 2nd Dahn grading after taking the first of eight tests on Friday in a process that will take two years.
“He did exceptionally well. He has never been to the Scottish championships before and he is absolutely thrilled,” said Vanessa Morton speaking of her sons unexpected achievement.
“He had the attitude of hopefully winning a medal but I don’t think he ever imagined he would get three and so he was over the moon.
“He competed strongly in all disciplines but he never expected to do as well as he did.
“To also gain the Grand Champion trophy for a third time is also a great achievement for him and no less than he deserved.
“We are really proud of him because he is so dedicated and loves what he is doing.”
