BURY St Edmunds’ Grace Sinnott, rounded off a successful season by being selected to play for England Under-14s in Edinburgh last weekend in a four team tournament.

England beat Northern Ireland 74-43 and Scotland 90-29, but lost to national Spanish club champions from Gerona, 59-51 and 55-52 in the final.

Grace figured well in every game and was pleased with her input and performance.

“I was nervous in the first game, everyone was, we were finding ways to the basket but not finishing well,” said Sinnott.

Playing the Spanish club champions Gerona was really exciting, it was a great atmosphere with the crowd cheering loudly as we matched them basket for basket.

By the time we played Scotland we were relaxed and scoring well, it was a real confidence boost.”

Grace was selected this time last year firstly to represent Ipswich then Suffolk and the East. She then went up to Lilleshall where the East finished strongly coming runners up in the country only losing out to London.

Since then she has attended England development training camps across the county throughout the season.

It’s an exciting time for basketball in the county with no fewer than seven youngsters still involved in England programmes, with Karlynn Edgeller from Wheeting and Hayley Rigby from Bury also in the New Horizons Under-17 program, part of the current National Teams system.

“Basketball punches well above its weight in Suffolk as far as achievements go,” added Suffolk Sport’s Kathryn James.

“We don’t have many junior clubs in the county but we do have some really keen teachers who are giving young players a good start in the sport.

“Let’s hope basketball gets some good coverage on the TV at the Olympics to inspire even more young people to play”.
