French provides a vital connection in win return
Bury St Edmunds got back to winning ways by defeating Dereham 2-0 to remain in the East Men’s League Division Two North promotion hunt.
Solid work from the back four of Paul Drake, Tom Cambell-Todd, Tom Rash and Dan Tasker kept the game goalless and Bury were relieved when the break came.
The Suffolk outfit finally took the lead when Steve Jackson finished a seven-pass move, and Owen Grisby sealed the points with a clean reverse-stick strike.
Dereham fought to the end and could have scored but for a man-of-the-match display from goalkeeper James French.
Bury II defeated Watton 2-1 in EML Division Four North East, despite missing many regulars.
Calvin Davis converted the rebound after thumping the ball against the post and Bury scored again after a great move involving Arun Blumfield and Keiran Devlin.
Watton pulled one back in the second half, but Bury showed their battling spirit to hold on for three points.
Bury III went into the winter break on the back of a 3-1 victory over IES IV in EML Division Five North East.
Keiran Williams bagged a brace, with Paul Whiting’s strike sandwiched in between.
Bury IV and Bury V clashed in EML Division Six North East, with the fourth team winning 3-2.
Lewis Dowling, Rob Johnson and Adrian Dawson found the target for the fourths to consolidate second place in the league.
Bury’s women defeated Watton 3-1 away in East Women’s League Division One North.
The visitors gained control early and the first goal was scored when a throughball from captain Millie Sharp found Amy Rush, whose pass was turned in by Naomi Lofthouse.
Watton levelled before half-time, but Bury then took control with Becky Guy and Lofthouse hitting the target.
Bury II defeated IES II 3-0 in their Suffolk Ladies’ League Premier Division encounter.
Good hockey from Claire Devlin, Vikki Waspe and Heidi Mathieson enabled Frances Oakes to drive home the first goal.
With Ellie Sarson and Nikki Cole working well on the left and Chloe Cunningham, Olivia Rush and Rachel Boreham doing the same on the right, Melissa Steven scored Bury’s second goal, followed by Boreham striking the third.
n Thetford were at the top of their game in this hotly-contested battle in the Marshall Motor Group Norfolk women’s League Premier Division, but were beaten 1-0 by Harleston Magpies III.
Sophie Kelly and Josie Sheahan performed well in defence, while goalkeeper Abby Rolph was named player of the match.
