A DOUBLE Olympic medallist has helped launch a partnership between West Suffolk Swimming Club and Culford School to provide a first-class swimming programme.

Nick Gillingham MBE, who is also a world champion and former world record holder, launched the affiliation by giving coaching sessions and delivering lectures on the demands and excitement of high performance swimming to Culford students.

Culford have joined with West Suffolk Swimming Club, who have been resident at the school for many years, which will allow the club to recruit swimmers nationally and internationally and help provide the school’s Swimming Scholarship.

“The event launched the professional relationship the school now has with the local swimming club where all their swimming scholars will benefit, an enviable environment I feel where education and sport is combined in day to day life,” he said.

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with such focused young people and staff who strive for excellence every day across all areas of school life.”

Dave Watkin, Culford assistant headteacher, added: “Nick produced an inspirational day to launch the Culford and West Suffolk Swimming club partnership.

“This exciting initiative will provide the infrastructure to rival some of the top swimming programmes in the country.

“Nick’s enthusiasm for swimming remains undiminished since he was producing world record performances and winning Olympic medals himself.

“Nick encouraged and inspired the swimmers to take small steps to achieve Olympic dreams.”
