Cash boost provides facility springboard

BURY Spectrum Gymnastics Club have moved a step closer to completing their redevelopment plans after receiving donations totalling £62,000.

The club will be given £50,000 of National Lottery funding from the Olympic legacy funding, from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund, which will enable them to upgrade facilities at their brand new gym on Northern Way, Bury St Edmunds, including installing a new reception area, creating a multifunctional activities room, cloakrooms, spectator seating and a sprung tumble track.

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the inspiration of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark, celebrating the link to the Games.

“This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for Bury St Edmunds,” said Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis.

“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the Eastern Region. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community.”

On top of that, Spectrum will also benefit from an additional £12,000 of funding from the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity, Sport England’s corporate partner for the Inspired Facilities fund.

Speaking of the news, delighted club manager Jean Mealham revealed the donations would enable Spectrum to extend the sessions they offer to a number of different sports to secure a lasting legacy.

“We are delighted to hear the news that we had been awarded the funding to complete phase two of our clubs facility project,” she said.

“The funding will not only ensure that our club looks and feels like a high class facility for all visitors, it will also enable us to start up additional sessions and grow the diversity of activities that we offer.

“The funding will help pay for the development of our multi-functional room so we are able to invite other user groups such as ballet and karate into the facility and will act as the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics’ legacy.”
