Brinkmann beats most of the men
LEADING THE WAY: Nicky Brinkmann
TEAM Titan’s Nicky Brinkmann was the first woman home in the Midnight Wo/Man Traithlon.
Brinkmann and James Heath took to the first discipline of the 1.9km open water lake swim with eager anticipation to cool down on the hottest day of the year.
Brinkmann came out of the water in second female position, and was soon bearing down for the lead spot after two laps of a nine-lap bike course.
Once in first position, she pushed the bike section hard and remained leading female into the 21km run in the dark and humid evening conditions.
Brinkmann finished first female and fourth overall, beating a good quality of male competitors along the way in 4hrs 33mins.
James Heath’s navigation skills on the swim went awry, as he went off course and lost four minutes correcting his mistake, putting him near the back of his age group.
After a consistent nine laps on the bike, Heath pulled himself back in contention with just a half-marathon to run.
However, just four miles in, his calf muscle pulled and he ran the remaining nine miles in pain, chasing down and winning his age category and 12th overall in 5hrs 2mins.
Another well known local Ultra Man, Alan MacPherson, was using this event as one of three long-distance events he has undertaken in the last six weeks in preparation for the World Ultraman Championships, to be held in Hawaii, in November.
MacPherson had a strong race throughout the evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning, on the long distance course, finishing in 11hours 34mins and 19th position.
