Athletes do themselves proud over the weekend

West Suffolk Athletics Club athletes were in action at opposite ends of East Anglia over the weekend.

Charlotte and Lauren Murphy continued their domination of the Ryston Grand Prix Series, with Charlotte more than a minute clear of the field in under-15 girls while younger sister Lauren was just under a minute ahead of the other competitors in U13 girls.

The latest round of the Essex League was held at a muddy Basildon and after travel delays caused Justine Anthony to arrive just five minutes before her race, a good run in the combined U17/U23 race saw her finish 10th overall and fifth U20. Christine Anthony was pleased with her run in Senior Women, placing 20th overall and second V45.

Cameron McKie continues his return to form with a solid run to ninth in U17 men despite not relishing the steep downhills in deep mud.

Mac Delo found the underfoot conditions difficult, but persevered to fifth in the senior men’s race which should ensure he wins the U20 age group, and the overall men’s title, if he were eligible, as well.

U17s Michael Bartram and Seb Anthony also arrived late and, with insufficient time for a full warm up opted to tackle the later, senior men’s race instead.

This proved an excellent workout over the longer 8k course, and both acquitted themselves well, finishing 19th and 25th respectively from 166 finishers.
