Arctic conditions proved a real treat
Husky Racing in Thetford Forest
THE weather may have ruined the weekend for sportsmen and women across the country, but for a few hardy souls in Thetford Forest it could hardly have been better.
Husky racers usually have to make do with muddy tracks and marsh-like fields to do battle on during the Elveden round of the British Siberian Husky Dog Racing Championship, but with the onset of a flurry of snow on Saturday night, Sunday morning brought a rare treat to race in conditions more common to their dogs.
Free Press photographer Mecha Morton braved the freezing conditions and treacherous roads to make it to the event and capture these stunning pictures of competitors in action with their trusted companions.
“I’ve been to the event before, but it’s never snowed,” she said. “You always associate huskies with being raced in the snow, so actually seeing it made it a little bit more exciting and special.
“It definitely added an extra dimension to the pictures.”
Sally Leich, of Lynford, near Thetford, helped to organise her local round of the championship and revealed the camaraderie that took place to help everyone enjoy the rare conditions.
She said: “We weren’t expecting that much snow so quite a few people didn’t have sleds with them, but those who did were lending them out to other people.”
Those who were not able to use sleds, took on the traditional British husky racing method of competing on rigs, which have wheels.
