Disneyland Paris is referred to as a place ‘where dreams come true’ and for the Combat Kickboxing Academy that could certainly be the case.
That is because six fighters from Peter Dunnett’s Bury St Edmunds’-based CKA are due to take on the world’s best fighters in the French capital next week, when they compete in the World Kickboxing Championships.
Competitors of the top organisations from around 55 countries will be travelling to the resort in search of glory, in a one day competition that can see fighters having to go through as many as eight demanding rounds of fights before getting their hands on a gold medal.
Challenging for a medal within the numerous categories are Leon Dunnett (-70kg), LLoyd Dunnett (+81kg), Marley Davies (-45kg), Abigail Read (-55kg), Rossi Reid (+45kg) and Jamie Waters (-65kg).
And in among a backdrop synonymous with magic and fantasy, Dunnett is confident his starlets can live up to his high expectations to create a fairytale ending of their own and savour some golden memories.
“I believe all six fighters have a good chance of claiming medals but Leon, Lloyd and Marley should be targeting gold,” he said. “We have been over to the Czech Republic for a competition before so travelling for a big competition like this shouldn’t faze my fighters too much.
“We have been training extremely hard and have been involved in 15 to 20 competitions, so all of the guys are very well prepared.
“It is a gruelling day with a lot of fights to win a title but I am happy with our preparation and quietly confident that we can bring back a medal haul.
“We will be seen as favourites by some and I am confident we can live up to that.”
