Netball: Teams battle it out for cup

SIX teams from the junior section of West Suffolk Netball League have been battling for the Zena Butcher Memorial Cup.

Made up of players under 17 from Cockfield, Moreton, Thetford, Jetts and Jubilee clubs, the tournament is based at Westley Middle School, Bury St Edmunds, with all matches being played on Wednesday evenings.

Jetts C 47, Cockfield 9

Jetts C played their third match of the season against Cockfield and went into a slight lead in the first quarter, but with strong defence and confident shooting, Jetts gradually extended their lead.

Players of the match: Caitlyn Saffery and Sian Clarke (Jetts C). Hollie Robin and Robyn Wardrop (Cockfield).

Jetts D 16, Moreton 9 13

Jetts D secured their first win of the season following a tight fought match.

Both sides fielded some young netballers but all players showed their commitment and determination of the game, entertaining both sets of supporters.

Players of the match: Ellen Laidlaw and Connie Gibbs (Jetts D). Izzy Upton and Phoebe Soons (Moreton 9).

Jubilee Juniors 17 Thetford Juniors 9

Jubilee started the game well and put Thetford under pressure during the first quarter, leading 8-2.

Thetford fought back during the second quarter, picking up confidence, and narrowed the score to 10-6.

Centre court players Katie Bridges, Sophie Barratt and Becca Elsden worked well together and fed some accurate passes to Kayleigh Elmer and there was some great defending from Katie Hale, Lizzie Dickson, Jess Addison and Jade Francis.

Thetford struggled to build on their second quarter fight back and Jubilee went on to win the match by eight goals.
