Motorsport: Morell holds off Howard challenge to claim victory

WEATHER conditions for the Holbecks Trial, organised by West Suffolk MC, were ideal for car trial motorsport. However, it did play a part in providing a higher number of non-starters than usual.

For those in attendance, the reduction in numbers led to more sport, as the club provided 30 observed sections during the day.

Among the notable absentees, was David Holmes, and this opened up a class-A battle between the Citroen AX GTs of Robin Howard and Cliff Morrell.

After the first five hills, Howard held a four-point lead but, by the lunch break, Morrell had opened up a 14-point advantage. During the afternoon, Howard closed the gap, aided by Morrell, who took a maximum score on one section.

With five hills remaining, Howard was only three points adrift, but Morrell hung on to take victory by a single point.

John Peterson's Mini was in close contention until lunch before falling way back, but still retaining third.

It was class B that was really hit by the non-starters, this leaving father and son, Paul and Matt Ellis, to fight it out with the VW Beetle of John Plant.

Plant left it as a family affair, settling for third spot as he did so, Matt eventually winning a close contest to put Paul into second position.

It was another close contest in class C. Here, it was not only for the class victory, but also overall honours, with both drivers, Ross Nuten and Tony Christy sharing Ross's Dellow.

Tony won the battle, and his score of 73 was good enough for overall victory. This handed the class win to Nuten, with Geoff Hodge moving up to secure second in his RDT Special.

The next trial from WSMC is at Wattisfield, on Sunday, March 22.

Not every event survived the weather last weekend. With around eight inches of snow on parts of the route, the organisers of the Great Bustard Endurance Rally were forced to make a cancellation.

The Lydden Winter Rallycross went ahead. The entry was larger, but the crowd smaller than in January.

One thing that stayed the same, was that Liam Doran took his 4x4 Ford Fiesta to victory in the Supercar A final.

Last week, I forgot to mention a start time for our motorsport evening on February 24.
