WEST Suffolk swim team competed at Bury in round two of the Suffolk Winter League, with every swimmer fighting for victory down to the last stroke.

At the end of the evening, West Suffolk were resounding winners, 63 points clear of their nearest rivals, winning 27 and coming second in a further 13 of the 40 events. Notable swims came from Tom Edwards, lowering his 100m butterfly and backstroke times to 1minute 8.15seconds and 1.08.18 respectively, while Patrick Briars registered 57.41 for 100m freestyle.

West Suffolk’s top points scorers, each winning two events, were Tom Edwards (14/15 years), Bethan Bottomley and Jen Titterington, who dominated in the open age group.

Also earning maximum points were Hannah Hill, Ollie Trent and Myles Turner in the 11-and-under age group, and Billy Cutts and Chloe Vail (14/15 years).

In the 12/13 years age group, the girls’ squad of Casey Maggs, Claire Robinson, Molly Ollington and Beth Wiseman made it a clean sweep for West Suffolk, each winning one event.

In the same age group, Gregory Buckle and Alex Proffitt also put in strong performances to earn first place finishes.

n Two West Suffolk swimmers travelled to Corby to compete in the Zonal Championships which consists of the fastest swimmers from the three regions, East, Midland and West Midlands.

Alex Harrison, 18, competed in the 200m butterfly where she swam to the final and finished in third place, bringing home her first medal of the competition.

Alex also competed in the 100m butterfly, finishing in fourth position just outside her best time.

Her final race of the weekend was the 200m breaststroke event, where she qualified fastest for the final and won by over a full body length to bring home the gold medal.

Also competing for West Suffolk was Danny Proffitt, 17, who competed in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and the 200, 400 and 1500m freestyle events.

Danny qualified for the 200m backstroke final and finished fourth in the 1500m event. His best swim of the weekend came in the 400m freestyle final, where he just missed out on the gold medal, finishing second in a new personal best time.
