THIS past week, Norman Ballard, Alan Dures, George Hazell and John Grinham, from Bury St Edmunds Veterans team, have been competing over in Germany in a series of International Tournaments.

On Monday, George’s England Over 70s team managed to beat Germany 1-0 and Holland 3-0, while Norman’s England Over 65s drew 0-0 with Holland.

Alan’s Tournament Over 65 (LX) side won 3-0 and John’s Tournament Over 60s side won 3-0 against Germany.

There was no game on Tuesday for George, but Norman’s Over 65s beat Scotland 9-0, Alan’s LX team beat Holland 2-1, and John’s Over 60s beat Holland 5-0.

Wednesday was a day off for Norman and Alan, but John’s team beat Wales 8-0, while George’s Over 70s could only manage a 0-0 draw against Germany.

On Thursday, George’s Over 70s beat Germany 1-0 to win their section and gold, and John’s Tournament Over 60s beat Alliance 5-0 to also win gold.

Finally, on Friday, Norman’s England Over 65s beat Italy to take a third gold before Alan’s LX Over 65s also won to make it four gold medals out of four.

Following closely on the success of her male counterparts, Katie Bedford has just returned from Australia having represented her country, playing both the Aussies and the Kiwis twice each in an international round robin. Her team came second in the final reckoning, just being pipped by New Zealand.
