After a five-year absence, West Suffolk Swimming Club returned to the Arena League competition with a dominant display in round one.

The evening got under way with two individual events, the 100m individual medley where Emily Wood, 14, swam to a strong second-place
finish in the open women’s event, with Tom Sarah
taking the top spot in the men’s event.

With strong team performances in the relays, West Suffolk won five of the first eight relay events with some great skills on takeovers, turns and finishes to put more points on the table.

Both the girls’ and boys’ nine-11 age groups won their 4x50m freestyle events in style with the teams including Bury-based swimmers Niamh Perry, Freya Wright and Gabby Greszler for the girls and William Harpur-Davies, Jack Vickers, Ciaran Riches for the boys.

Adding maximum points from the first round of relays of the night were the boys’ under-15 freestyle team where Ben Wilkinson and Myles Turner finished first, as did the boys’ open 4x50m medley team, including Tom Sarah, and Billy Cutts.

Individual winners on the night also included William Harpur-Davies, Turner, Beth Mottram, Ciaran Riches and Patrick Briars

The last block of relays
saw WSSC again win five of
the last eight races, with victories coming from both the medley relay teams, including Perry, Wright and Greszler for the girls and Harpur-Davies, Vickers and Riches for the boys.

Wilkinson and Turner again secured top points and in the final race of the evening, the open boys’ freestyle relay, Billy Cutts, Briars and Sarah won in style to cap off a great night of racing.

From 50 events on the night, WSSC wrapped up 26 wins and 17 second-place finishes to amass a total of 248 points, 42 points up on joint second-place finishers Newport Pagnell and City of Lincoln Pentaqua.

Round two of the league takes place on Saturday, November 9, with the final round in December.
