Twin towns join forces in gala

SWIMMERS, parents and representatives from Thetford’s twinned towns swimming clubs (Hurth and De Kempvis) took part in a weekend of light-hearted competitive swimming and socialising with their English counterparts in the Links Gala.

The late Ben Culey, a former club president and mayor of Thetford, was one of the prime organisers in town twinning for Thetford in the 1960s and was involved in establishing the Links Gala.

The inaugural gala was held in Thetford in July 1973 and was between Thetford and Hurth. From then on it became an annual event, with the team from Spijkinesse joining in 1976.

This year’s event saw Thetford come out as the trophy winners on the day after nearly 50 events.
