The Tolly Cobbold Cup is back in Bury St Edmunds’ trophy cabinet after an absence of 16 years as they overcame Ipswich at Thorpness on Sunday.
The 36-hole clash swung both ways with Bury edging the morning and afternoon sessions by just two holes.
Perhaps the stand-out performance came from Dave Mackie and Andy George who, three down in the morning, fought back for a five-hole success after lunch, which eased Bury towards the trophy.
The morning advantage was largely due to solid performances from Gary Clark and Colin Aves (3up) and Adrian Leggett with 14-year-old Michael Gee, who were 2up.
Delighted non-playing captain Barry Storey, who predicted after the first round that his team could go ‘all the way’, said: “It was a close match as you would expect in a final and it was fought in good spirit by both teams on a course in excellent condition.”
The Tolly Cobbold competition is one of the most popular in the county due to its foursomes format for handicaps of 10 and above.
It was last won by the Bury club in 1997, when they beat Stoke-by-Nayland in the final at Felixstowe Ferry.
Scores. Bury scores morning: G Knott & C McDonald level, D Mackie & A George 3down, A Leggett & M Gee 2up, G Clark & C Aves 3up. Bury 2up. Afternoon: Knott & McDonald 1down, Mackie & George 5up, Leggett & Gee 1down, Clark & Aves 1down. Bury 2up. Result: Ipswich 0, Bury 4.
Bury members were hoping for a county double yesterday when they were due to take on Seckford in the Beaumont Trophy final at Ipswich.
Stowmarket member Andrew Witter has earned himself a place in the Audi Quattro Cup world final in Los Angeles, in October.
With playing partner Mike Broad, he won the UK final at Bowood Country Club.
The pair scored 40 Stableford points to book their ticket after a countback with the runners-up.
Witter and Broad will represent Great Britain in the World Final, at the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles.
The competition – in its 23rd year – involves almost 80,000 players from 50 countries competing for a place in the week-long world final.
