THE Haberden will host rugby league action for the first time this year when the Bury Titans take on the Bedford Tigers in the Rugby League Conference East Regional tomorrow (2.30pm).
Bury lost their first match of the season on Saturday, 46-24 at St Ives Roosters, but they will be hoping for a good start in front of their home fans.
“All the lads are looking forward to it,” said the Titans’ player/chairman Leon Berrill. “It was a promising start with a lot of youngsters. We are aiming for the top three and then to get through the play-offs.”
The squad is predominantly made up of young union players from Bury and six made their rugby league debut in the defeat at St Ives.
Among those turning out for Bury are captain Jason Fisher, centre Scott Macro and stand-off Jez Powell.
Berrill added: “The majority of the boys like to play to keep their fitness levels up, but we do take it seriously and once we get our rugby union heads swicthed off, we are straight into league mode.”
Bury will also have the opportunity to test themselves against local rivals Sudbury — the Suffolk town is hosting a league side for the first time in its history.
“They did well in their first game against the Northampton Demons, so it will be interesting to see how they fare this season,” said Berrill.
Of his own team’s opening day performance, the chairman added: “We played pretty well, but we had six new players who hadn’t played rugby league before — the score did not reflect the performance.”
