STOWMARKET remain on the UK swimming map thanks to a fine display from 10 of the club’s older swimmers competing at the British Masters Championships, at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
Leading the way for the team was Sue Holdich, who won four medals. Holdich is the National Champion in the ladies’ 65-69 years 100m individual medley with a time of 1 minute 49.24 seconds.
She also clinched silver in 100m breaststroke (1.52.35), bronze medals in 50m breastroke (50.84), 100m frontcrawl (1.33.48) and fifth in 50m frontcrawl.
Dale Barker narrowly missed gold by 0.3 seconds in the men’s 45-49yrs 200m backstroke (2.37.09). He added bronze with his 50m back 31.76, was fourth in the 100m back and eighth in the 100m IM.
David Harrison completed Stowmarket’s individual medal haul with bronze in the 25-29 years 100m breaststroke in a time of (1.06.04).
Harrison was fourth in 50m breaststroke 30.23. He set new age group East Region records in both events.
He also sprinted to fourth in 50m fly, eighth in the 100m fly, ninth in 100m frontcrawl and 11th in 50m frontcrawl.
Three other Stowmarket swimmers also competed in the men’s 25-29 years category. Joe Freezer came top with a seventh place in 50m fly, 12th in 50m back, 14th in 50m breaststroke and 24th in the 50m front crawl.
Tom Harrison’s best result was 15th in the 50m breaststroke, while Ollie Bumstead came 25th in 100m fly.
Len Phoenix had a disappointing meet compared to his usual high standard, having to settle for fifth place in both 1500m and 800m frontcrawl. He came sixth in the 60-64 years 100m IM and seventh in 50m back.
Battling it out in the 19-24 years age group were brothers Adam and Marc Duszynski. Both achieved their highest placing in the 100m IM, with Adam coming 12th and Marc 24th.
Hannah Stockley put in some superb swims, grabbing 10th position in both the 100m back and 200m breaststroke in the ladies’ 19-24 years group. She also finished 14th in the 50m back.
Stowmarket gained medals in the 4x200m frontcrawl. David Harrison, Dale Barker, Ollie Bumstead and Tom Harrison broke the East Region record in the 120-159 years combined age group, securing silver.
The same swimmers collected bronze in the 4x50m frontcrawl.
