STOWMARKET bowler Mark Royal believes he is finally ready to get his hands on the most sought-after prize in his sport.
The world number four will be gunning for glory on Saturday as he makes the short trip to Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk, to compete in the Potters Holidays World Indoor Bowls Championships.
His best run in the competition came last year as he reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winner and current world number one Paul Foster, but this time Royal is confident of going one better to clinch the main prize and realise his dream.
“I certainly want to win it, that is the dream and I think I am ready to win it,” he said. “I have been playing well and my preparations for the competition have been really good.
“Last year was the best bowls I have ever played but I lost out in the semi-finals. Hopefully I can play as well as I did again, but go one step further.
“I think I can win the championship, in fact I know I can do it.”
Royal will go into his first round tie against Scottish international qualifier Paul Boyd as heavy favourite and he is fully aware of the danger of an upset.
“My first round match against Paul Boyd will be a tough one,” he added.
“You can do as much preparation as you want but a lot will come down to what happens on the day and how you deal with that pressure.
“There is certainly a lot more pressure being the favourite in the first round, you need to get through that and then you can begin to relax and look to the latter stages.”
