West Suffolk Athletics Club travelled to the Young Athletes National Road Relay Championships and returned with some medal success.

Teams of three athletes each ran one lap of the undulating 3,900m course at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, with all age groups running the same course.

First out were the under-13 girls, with West Suffolk fielding two teams.

Strong performances from Olvia Allum, Mikayela Sealby and new member Elena Saiu-Bell saw the B team home in a respectable 17th place, while Lauren Murphy, Megan Newton, Nella Walters helped the A team home in fourth, just 12 seconds off a bronze medal.

West Suffolk also fielded two teams in the under-13 boys’ event.

A promising 16th place finish for the A team was sealed by Niall Ackroyd, Thomas McCarthy and Jess Walters, with the B team consiting of Tommy Martin, Adam Newton and Cameron Ackroyd getting the B team home in 37th.

And so it was left to the under-15 girls to end the day with a flourish.

Charlotte Murphy got the team off to an excellent start to put them into third, with Holly Davies’ steady
performance keeping them
in the hunt for a medal.

It was left to Sophie Tooley to finish in determined fashion to clinch the team third place and medal success.

Murphy and Tooley recorded sixth and seventh fastest legs of the day respectively.
