RISBYGATE Tennis Club finally managed to overcome the poor weather as the Norfolk & Suffolk Mixed team began their campaign in Division One with a convincing 6-2 win over Burwell B.
The first pairing of Annemarie Vis and Ben Hayden lost 6-4, 6-4 against their Burwell counterparts, but consolidated their game to win 7-5 and 6-2 against the second pair.
Lucy Allen, playing her first match for Risbygate, and Andrew Willis took all four sets, 6-0, 6-3 versus the Burwell seconds, and 6-3, 6-3 against their first pair.
Meanwhile, Risbygate Men’s II travelled to Fulbourn and drew 4-4 in a Cambs League Division Four match.
Kelvin Morton teamed up with Mike Ellis, and Ian Christelow partnered Gary King. Both pairs beat the Fulbourn second pair comfortably, but found their first pair too strong.
Risbygate Men’s second team also travelled to Cambridge V on Friday, and suffered a 6-2 defeat.
Ian Christelow and Kelvin Morton found the Cambridge first pair too strong and lost 6-1, 6-0.
In their match against the hosts’ second pair, Christelow and Morton won the first set 6-4, but the second set was very tight and they were disappointed to lose the tie-break 9-7 after being 6-2 ahead.
Geoff Johnson partnered Will Dunster and, having lost the first set 6-1 against the Cambridge second pair in their opening rubber, they recovered to take the second set, 6-4.
In the reverse rubber, they lost 6-2, 6-1 to the Cambridge first pair.
In the Grey’s Cup, Risbygate Ladies had a close match against St Neots.
Melanie Lesser and Louise Vivian had an easy first match against the first pair, winning 6-1, 6-2. They lost the first set against the second pair 6-2, but came back to win 6-3 in the second set.
Newcomers Jane Hamblin and Lucy Allen had a tough match against the seconds, losing 7-5, 6-2 and a close 6-4, 7-6 against the second pair.
