Priory School pupil Rhys Turnbull-Bester underlined his status as one of the best young athletes in the country with four gold medals at the Typhoo National Junior Athletics Championships.

The Red Lodge-based teenager won the 800m in two minutes and 24 seconds, before taking first in the 400m with a time of 60.3 seconds.

Turnbull-Bester finished the 200m in 26.1 seconds to win gold and become a triple national champion in his disability classification (T20).

The 15-year-old continued his blistering form to help his team finish first in the 4x400m relay.

Turnbull-Bester said: “I’m really pleased. Since taking up athletics two years ago it has changed my life and I have got better and better both on the track and in school.”

The two day event, which was held at Warwick University in Coventry over the weekend, is one of the highlights of the disability sports calendar.

Turnbull-Bester and his fellow competitors will be hoping their success might lead to a career in athletics.
