THE third Suffolk County Invitation Fencing Championships was held at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre in Stowmarket. The competition attracted entrants from a range of clubs across the Eastern Region (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk).

Chairman, Stuart Clough, said: “The SCI started three years ago because we have lots of members who we feel would benefit from competitive experience, but who seemed a bit reluctant to go out there and compete, so we decided that we would bring the fight to them and run our own competition.

“The first competition was a success with much positive feedback, so we decided to keep on doing it and are now in our third year with record entry numbers. The main aim of the day was to provide a friendly introduction to competitions, how they are run and what to expect without worrying about ranking points or the fear of having an opponent ranked in the countries top-ten.”

The overall winner of the senior competition was Kieran Hart, from Stowmarket Fencing Club.

Kieran is 20 years old and is currently studying at the University of Kent. During term-time, he trains with the UKC team and in the holidays returns to Stowmarket Fencing Club, were he first learned the sport.

On winning the Suffolk County Invitation Kieran said: “I was happy to enter the Suffolk County Invitation again this year, as the atmosphere is always really fun and sportsmanlike. It was a great experience to enter the competition and work my way through the poules to become the first seed, and it was fun to fight through the direct elimination round to reach the final. The highlight of the day was definitely winning the final and I would recommend the competition to all Eastern Region fencers next year, regardless of your experience level.”
