Mildenhall Sharks’ James Garry improved his entry times in all four of his events at the National Para-Swimming Championships in Manchester recently.

The event also involved British Paralympic champions, including Jessica-Jane Applegate.

Competing in the S10 (physical impairment) category Garry qualified for five disciplines at the championships, but decided to just enter the 100m backstroke and 50m, 100m and 400m freestyle races.

This was his first competition in a 50-metre pool and Garry enjoyed an excellent weekend, improving on his entry time in all four of his outings.

His best race was the 400m freestyle on Sunday afternoon, where he knocked more than 25 seconds off his previous best time.

He may have been inspired by the 200m race immediately before his, with Bethany Firth setting a new S14 (intellectual impairment) World record, just ahead of Jessica-Jane Applegate; with Garry waiting to start his race at the end of Applegate’s lane.
