Manfred stars with nine medals in regional championships

Stowmarket Swimming Club’s Manfred Battle won no less than nine medals at the ASA East Region Summer Long Course Championships.

The 13-year-old swam in 12 events in the event held at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, finishing third overall in his age group.

He struck gold to become East Regional Champion in the 100m butterfly in a time of one minute and 06.49 seconds.

He also took silver medals in 200m butterfly (2mins 36.01secs), 50m butterfly (30.07), 200m backstroke (2.30.10), and bronze medals in 400m freestyle (4.48.01), 400m individual medley (IM) (5.27.95), 200m IM (2.35.29) and 100m backstroke (1.09.43).

He also reached the final in his other four swims: 200m freestyle (2.17.80), 50m backstroke (32.92), 50m freestyle (29.59) and 100m freestyle (1.03.55)

Coach Sylvia Harrison said: “Manfred had a fantastic weekend of superb swims. Every swim was a long course personal best, and he stepped up to every final to achieve faster times than he had done in the heats.”

Five other Stowmarket members, four making their Championships debuts, swam personal best (pb) long course times. Lija Radzuinaite (13) swam well in her second Championships in her backstroke events - 200m (2.43.43) to take 21st, 100m (1.12.72) eighth, and 50m (33.32)for eighth place in the final.

William Debenham (14) swam a superb 50m freestyle (28.26), winning his heat and finishing in 12th place; Luca Clarke (13) swam a strong 200m breaststroke (3.07.61) finishing 16th; Lucy Griffin (13) swam a determined 50m backstroke (34.98) gaining 17th place.

Phoebe Hayden (14) swam both 100m and 50m backstroke events, making both finals, finishing seventh in 100m (1.12.91) for a massive PB, and just missed out on a medal when she finished fourth in the 50m (32.91s).
