Paul Maddy, a multiple winner on his previous visits to Thetford Pro-Am, did it again at the November meeting last week.

The Gog Magog professional was the only starter to handle the tough, long-playing conditions well enough to match the par of 72.

It earned him the top professional cheque, finishing ahead of a trio on 74.

Maddy did not look a winner when he opened with bogeys at holes 14 and 15. But three birdies on his second nine put him under par and on the way to victory.

West Row professional, Ben Kerr, was optimistic after covering his first eight holes in three under par, but ran into a disastrous run of six successive bogeys.

His consolation was a closing birdie that put him in the money alongside Stuart Brown (Orton Meadows) and Andy Thorpe (Peterborough Milton) on two over par 74.

In the Pro-Am event, former Thetford junior Brad Wilkins paired up with his Fynn Valley member, four handicapper Sarah Howe, to post a winning 42 points.

Wilkins made six birdies with his own ball, and his win in the team event slightly dulled the pain of seven bogeys and a double bogey in his round of 75.

The meeting was again well supported, with 14 professionals in the field of 108.

No doubt most will be back for the Christmas meeting on December 19.

Ben Moyes, a 14-year-old member of Stowmarket Golf Club, won the 13th Stonham Players’ Championship by six shots. He scored a one over-par 30, including two birdies and an excellent up-and-down from 40 yards on the ninth hole for a par three.

Moyes, a 19 handicap junior, has come through the Suffolk Junior Development Squad Programme and is coached by Tony Dobson, at Stonham Barns.

This was the last of eight events held this year for juniors from five to 14 years.

Stonham Barns have been running junior tournaments since 2001 and currently stage eight events through the year.

All juniors from four to 15 (boys and girls) are welcome to play whatever their standard or ability. The events are usually held on the last Sunday of each month, from April to November.
