West Suffolk Athletics Club enjoyed success in the latest round of the Suffolk Schools Cross Country Championships, held in Holbrook.

More than 30 West Suffolk athletes had qualified from the previous round, representing their various schools and most made it through this round at Royal Hospital School.

WSAC athletes were most dominant in the Junior Girls’ (Years 8 and 9) and Inter Boys’ (Years 10 and 11) races where they took the first four places.

Sophie Tooley (St Benedicts) led home the Junior Girls, with Holly Davies (County Upper) second, Nella Walters (Culford) third and Megan Newton (Stour Valley) fourth.

In Inter Boys, Michael Bartram (County Upper) took the win, followed by Ben Eames (Castle Manor), Cameron McKie (Hartismere) and Seb Anthony (KEGS), with Matt Le Poidevin (County Upper) also well placed in seventh.

Mac Delo (West Suffolk College) continued his domination of the Senior Boys’ age group with a comfortable win.

Further top 10 finishes came from Olivia Allum (Culford) and Claudia Spencer-Hall (Breckland) with second and sixth in Minor Girls.

Thomas McCarthy (St Louis) and Jess Walters (Culford) were third and fifth in the Minor Boys.

Christy Williams (County Upper) was third in Junior Boys, where early leader Jacob Freeborough (County Upper) was forced to pull out with an ankle injury.

Katie Duncan (KEGS) was a little below her best, placing fifth in Senior Girls.

The final round will be held at Culford School, on January 17, after which the county team mangers will select
runners to represent Suffolk at the Anglian Schools competition, against teams from
Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire.
