Bury St Edmunds Golf Club Junior member Max Adams is the European Under-18s Champion.

Sponsored by the US Kids Golf Foundation, this prestigious competition includes the world’s best young golfers and was held on the challenging Luffness New Golf Club in East Lothian last week.

Adams’ last-round 72 was sealed with a bold 6ft putt on the 18th hole to finish two over par for the three rounds and winner by one shot. He has enjoyed a stunning 12 months during which he won the club’s Junior Bone Trophy, Junior Matchplay Shield and been selected for the club’s Stenson team, who last month won their first-round match against Southwold.

Playing off a handicap of one, he is also a member of Bury’s Junior team (along with Eamon Balaam and Jack Lankester) who are through to the semi-final of the Suffolk County Team Championships.

Stowmarket

Stowmarket Golf Club members Liz Laflin (5hcp) and Lily Kent (2) will again compete in the Suffolk Golf Union’s Haskell Trophy. Last year in this Knockout Scratch competition, they lost in the semi-final to winners Ipswich. Laflin is an established low handicap player and a former member of the Suffolk County team, while Kent has recently graduated from the University of West Florida and is the reigning Stowmarket Club Ladies’ Champion.

In their first-round match against Haverhill, at home, they dovetailed well as a foursome pairing and were a massive 9-up after the first 18 holes. After lunch, they only needed to play to the seventh hole for a comprehensive victory.

They will enjoy home advantage again in the quarter finals against either Rookery Park or Aldeburgh.

Georgina Parker and Lynne Wright (Bury GC) are also through to the quarter finals and face a tough trip to Felixstowe.

The Suffolk

The ideal golf weather conditions attracted a good turn-out for the club’s Mid-Week Medal last week, but the scores were mixed. Two better than his handicap after the first nine holes and six better at the finish, Mick Davey made the most of the conditions winning the Qualifier with a nett 66.

Club captain, Alf Jackson, also enjoyed the conditions returning a three under par 69, while Graham Chapman kept up his recent run of form coming third with nett 71.

Davey’s win moved him up the Mid-Week Order of Merit table to fourth place with 21 points, but John Dale still leads the way with 28.

Suffolk Golf Union

Local low handicap golfers will be competing in the Suffolk Amateur Championship for the Suffolk Golf Union’s Challenge Cup at Diss Golf Club on Sunday, June 11.

There is a full entry of 120 golfers for this 36-hole popular event, with a waiting list in place. Apart from the winner being crowned Suffolk Amateur Champion, there is also the prize of representing Suffolk in the English County Championships, at Woodhall Spa, in September.

Those taking part include Stephen Duffety (5hcp) who recently played for the Suffolk County Seniors’ team and fellow Bury GC members Ben Coleman (2), Michael Gee (4), Max Adams (1) and Craig Nurse (3), four promising young golfers who have seen their handicaps drop dramatically in the last couple of years.

Flempton also has two young golfers taking part in Alfie Halil (4) and Jude Everett (6). From Stowmarket GC Kieran Issitt (5), Jack Forgan (1) and Andy Cunningham (1) are all capable of a low score. This competition is played off scratch so there will be no handicap assistance, with the lowest combined gross score over two rounds deciding who will be Suffolk Champion.

Gregor Tait, who is a member at Aldeburgh, was last year’s winner and plays off a handicap of +2 and will be one of the hot favourites.

The top 16 finishers will compete for the Suffolk County Matchplay Champion’s President’s Mashie at Diss GC on July 8-9.
