EAST MEN’S LEAGUE
DIVISION FIVE NORTH EAST
Dereham III 0
Bury St Edmunds IV 5
Bury St Edmunds IV boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation after romping to an emphatic 5-0 win away at Dereham III.
Dereham began the game strongly and Gibson had to be alert to thwart several Dereham attacks.
Gradually Bury settled into the game and began to exert pressure on Dereham. A green card for Charles was a temporary setback and during this absence Bury took the lead with a well stuck short corner from Dykes.
Dereham responded strongly and it took a diving tackle from Sullivan to preserve Bury’s lead to half time.
Following a rousing team talk by Sullivan, Bury began the second half in determined fashion and were soon three goals up including Dyball helping Dawson’s goal-bound effort over the line from close range.
Dereham remained dangerous on the counter attack but the Bury rearguard was resolute as further goals followed at the other end resulting in Dykes completing his hat-trick.
n Elsewhere, there was less joy for Bury St Edmunds V who suffered a comprehensive 4-2 defeat against Norfolk Nomads in Division Six North East.
In a difficult afternoon, Bury’s task was made harder as they lost Chris Blake, Peter Maddever and John Sommerville all to injuries throughout the encounter.
The only real highlight was Jon Boyle’s brilliant individual effort for his consolation goal.
However, three goals conceded in a 15 minute spell caused the damage as Norfolk Nomads sealed the points.
