Bury St Edmunds, newly-promoted to East Men’s Hockey League Division Two North, opened the season with a goalless draw at home to Dereham II.

Both teams created a number of chances but neither were able to convert pressure into goals.

Ben Whittaker and Ian Konrath went close to netting for Bury after the break, while man-of-the-match Joe Tasker was on hand to clear off the line late

There has been a significant number of changes to the team since last season, but captain Nik Ciappi and coach Alan Snow have ambitions to create a similar team cohesion and spirit in the coming weeks which saw the team succeed last season.

A brace from Steve Tassel and a strike from new recruit Sam Rutter were good enough to see Bury II run out 3-0 winners against Norwich V.

Bury captain Tony Major hopes to press on from last season’s mid-table finish and be in contention for promotion come the spring.

There was also victory for Bury III against Thetford With Ben Gale (2) and Tim Thompson on the scoresheet.

Harry Gale offered lots of width and running, while Issac Charles displayed endless energy in the middle of the park.

Bury IV took the lead through a scuffed effort by Dawson before Lowestoft Railway hit back to take the lead.

In a frantic finale, Bury hit the post, had a shot cleared off the line and had a goal disallowed.

A solitary effort from Tony Bass was enough to see Bury V to a 1-0 victory over Norwich VI.

Minutes earlier, young debutant James King thought he had opened the scoring only to see the ball rebound off the inside of the post before goalkeeper Eddie Gibson denied Norwich an equaliser with an outstanding late save.

A Becky Guy goal was good enought to earn Bury ladies a share of the spoils against their counterparts from Lowestoft, while Bury Ladies III won 2-1 at Cambridge Nomads.
