Bury St Edmunds 3

St Ives 1

The start of 2016 brought a much-needed three points for Bury St Edmunds, with a 3-1 win over St Ives helping them climb up the table on Saturday.

Nik Ciappi scored twice, while Ian Konrath was also on target for Bury, as they moved up one place to eighth in the East Men’s League Division Two North table.

n Bury St Edmunds II maintained their position at the top of Division Four North East after beating Newmarket II 3-1 at the weekend.

A visit to their local rivals was always going to be a feisty affair, however Bury were not going to be denied as goals from Paul Whiting (two) and Lee Godbold secured the victory.

n In Division Five North East, Bury St Edmunds III enjoyed a 5-0 win away at Harleston Magpies V on Saturday.

In the first-half Bury were very rusty and went into the break with the match still goalless, but strikes from captain Paul Lawrence, Michael Thompson, Matt Thompson, Harry Gayle and Rob Johnson capped off a much better second-half performance.

n Bury St Edmunds IV resumed their Division Five North East campaign with a 0-0 draw against local rivals Sudbury III.

In a physically-demanding encounter Bury were able to match their higher-ranked opponents, but crucially could not find a breakthrough as the match finished in a stalemate.

n Bury St Edmunds V remain top in Division Six North East after coming from behind to beat IES V 4-2 at the weekend.

Not for the first time this season the leaders found themselves a goal behind early on, however strikes from Tony Bass and Mark Dykes then gave Bury a 2-1 lead at the break.

IES then levelled the match to make it 2-2, before Bass was on target again and then Alex Jones touched in number four on his debut to seal a 4-2 win.

n In Division Seven North East, Bury St Edmunds VI were beaten 3-1 at UEA Men IV, while Jo Chapman grabbed the equaliser for Bury St Edmunds Ladies in their East Women’s League Division Two North East clash at Dereham II.

n Elsewhere in Division Two North East, Bury St Edmunds Ladies II drew with Yarmouth, while in Division Four North West South Bury St Edmunds III thrashed Cambridge South III 6-0.
