Mike Bowen earned his first cyclo-cross win of the season at the muddy Hillyfields event held in Colchester, organised by the AmisVelo club.

Bowen got the better of two close adversaries in the vets race with 18 seconds to spare to reinforce his fourth-place standing in the league.

He was one of 17 West Suffolk members taking part and was followed home by Simon Elsworth (39th), Adrian Grimwood (41st), Barry Denny (46th) and David Griggs (59th) in the vets race, with Ian Mortlock a non-starter.

Matt Denny took 53rd in the senior race, but Richard Stiff and James Asker failed to finish.

Lianna Denny was 24th in the under-12 race, while Charlie Knowler (10th), Harley Gregory (11th), Oliver Griggs (12th) and Victoria Asker (17th) finished the under-10s’ event.

Gregory was also the best under-8.

In the under-14/16 race, Fraser Elsworth crashed heavily and retired while Sam Asker claimed 12th (second under-14), with brother Matt 30th.
