Birdie-king Wilson so close to breaking his own course record

DAN Wilson was within a shot of beating his own course record at Flempton on Saturday.

After firing an eagle three and eight birdies over 17 holes, he needed only a par three at the final hole to better the 64 he established two years ago.

But, he took four to get down and so settled for another six under 64.

Wilson’s superb round in the club’s Vincent Goblet was not without the odd blemish - he found four bogeys in all, which left the card showing only five regulation scores.

He must have felt it was his day when he opened with three threes — birdie, birdie, eagle — and started the second nine with a hat-trick of birdies.

His plus one handicap gave him a winning net 65, three better than Ralph Evans (3)68, Mark Rea (2)68 and Chris Springthorpe (13)68, who must have thought they were in with a shout.

n Another man off to a flyer was Phelan Curr, who won Division One of Bury St Edmunds men’s Midweek Stableford. He rolled in three birdies putts over his first five holes and added three more on his back nine for a three under par 69. It converted to 44 points while playing from five.

Ian Maddams matched that score in topping Division Two.

n The Bury club’s women’s section is buzzing following the Cranworth Trophy team’s progress to the final for the first time since winning the county inter-club competition several years ago.

They beat Cretingham by 35-10 at Halesworth in the semi-final to line up a date with Woodbridge in the final at Waldringfield, on September 22.

They finished ahead in all six singles matches and two of the three foursomes clashes. Scores below.

n Thetford juniors are League Three winners in Norfolk county’s Junior Bass Trophy, having won six of their eight matches with 15 points. They now await other league winners to learn of their opponents in the play-offs.

The juniors became runners-up for the second time in the County’s KK Smith Trophy, going down in windy conditions by seven holes to a strong Middleton Hall team.

Ollie Chapman was Thetford’s lone winner, by an excellent six holes.

n Ben Moyes, an 11-year-old member at Stowmarket, has won his first under-12 title in the August Stonham Barns Junior Tournament. Moyes scored an impressive four over par 33 and won by three shots. He started his golf at Stonham Barns as part of the centre’s junior academy and has progressed to membership at Stowmarket with a handicap of 22.

The next event will be held on Sunday, September 25, and is open to any boy or girl under 12 on January 1, 2011.
