Three clubs - Green Belt, Wickford and Middlesex County - combined to organise the Middlewick Stages Rally at MOD Woodbridge last weekend, the latest round of the AEMC Championship, writes Arthur Debenham.
It was to prove a very good day’s sport for the Rix family, with Ian at the wheel of his Ford RS 1600, and his son, Aaron, making his debut in the Ford Ka normally driven by Clare, his mother. Ian had his usual co-driver, Steve Greenhill, while Rob Cookoccupied the hot seat in the Ka.
For both crews, the day ran trouble-free and of the 40-plus field Ian brought the Escort home 17th overall together with a class victory while Aaron’s day ended with a creditable 19th overall and second in class.
Our other local crews were less fortunate, Dave Daniels/Dennis Suttenwood retired their Mitsubishi Evo 6 on the second of the eight special stages while father and daughter, John and Laura Cooledge, found their Ford Anglia unwilling to fire-up after stage four. The battle for overall victory was fought out all day between winners Mark Jasper/Don Whyatt - Ford Escort MKII, and the Subaru Impreza WRC of Niall Moroney/Elgan Davies, with just 15 seconds separating them at the end.
The Tin Tops Series was back in action at Silverstone last weekend. A close qualifying session saw Mark Livens secure P5 in his Honda Civic Type R. This position was held up to his pit stop. What should have been a 25-second stop turned into a longer one due to a problem with the seat harness. However, a determined return to the action saw fifth recovered by the chequered flag.
Although the Magnificent 7s were at Silverstone, Kevin Williams took his Caterham CSR to Cadwell Park for two Allcomers races at the MSVR meeting. Having qualified in P4, the start of his first race saw the car in front stall, losing Kevin time, but fourth was regained after around seven laps.
As he began to put pressure on the third position car, so an incident ahead resulted in another delay, this seeing fourth as the end result.
Race two told a similar story. Held up on the start, he was virtually the last car away, but another strong drive brought another fourth-place finish.
The MSVR meeting at Donington contained two rounds of the Toyo Tyres Racing Saloon Series.
Both events were dominated at the fron by BMW E36 M3 versions, including that of Stephen Pearson. For the Chedburgh-based driver, it should have been two podiums for two third-place results.
However, the organisers decided to hand Pearson a 30-second penalty in race one for having passed a car during a yellow-flag situation, this dropping him to fourth. Race two saw no such problems and third place was achieved.
A full house of 75 crews arrived at Chelmsford MC’s Targa Rally, which opened the 2016 Anglia Motor Sport Club Challenge for 2016, at Wethersfield.
Overall victory went to Adrian White/David Lobb in a BMW 318is from the host club, but a good number of class awards came to crews from West Suffolk Motor Club.
Fourth overall and third in Class MB, were Andrew and Bill Scott in this Mazda MX5. Marcus Keeble/Frazer Brown took the Renault Clio to Class MA victory while Class NA was dominated by local crews.
Vini Cruz/Andrew Araujo secured first in a Peugeot 106, Duncan and Laura Christmas shared their Austin Mini, with second and third places respectively being achieved, and as Andre and Vini swapped seats in the 106, so they rounded up the top four.
Class NB also saw WSMC crews in the top two places, both in Mazda MX5s. Paul and Samantha Webb were followed home by Kevin Lockwood/Jason Stryczek. Round two of the challenge will be in the hands of Wickford AC, at MOD Woodbridge on May 22.
