Juniors claim cup for county

Culford Tennis Club's U-10 boys took part in the regional final of the Aegon Champions Cup, held at Culford School.

The team, which consisted of William Cooke-Wharton (No 1 seed for Suffolk), Matthew Mitcham (No 1 seed for Cambridgeshire), Alistair Reid, Charlie Gold and James Atkinson, qualified for the final having beaten Haverhill and Newmarket in the qualifying rounds. They went on to beat local rivals, David Lloyd Tennis Club, in Ipswich, for the opportunity to represent Suffolk.

On the day, the boys competed against teams from Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckingham-shire and Beds.

William and Matthew were solid as top seeds and, following some fine tennis, the final match of the day was against Riverside Club, from Bedfordshire, which the boys needed to win in order to claim victory.

William and Matthew won both their singles and doubles matches in style, leaving Alistair, Charlie and James requiring just one win from their final three games to clinch the title.

Alistair and James were next on court for their doubles match, which they won, 5-3, to claim the cup for club and county.
