Joshua is on Olympic trail
FOLLOWING his selection to the World Class Start Project, Joshua Tonnar has made significant progress as a newcomer to the sport of rowing.
Since April, the 18-year-old has impressed in a crew boat and a single as he attempts to learn the technical side of this most demanding of sports.
However, Tonnar's coach, Mary McLachlan has been pleased with the speed he has shown in training and racing.
And, the former St Benedict's Upper School student, has had particular success on the rowing machine.
"That is where he has shown his real talent so far," said McLachlan.
Tonnar pulled a time of 6:09.2 in the two-kilometre test, his score putting him second in the country for his age category. The world record is 5.36 and to be in the next Olympic squad, the goal is to break the six-minute barrier.
"I believe Josh will do this next year. He will then trial as an U-23 in the 2010 season, looking to break into the senior ranks in time for the 2012 London Olympics," said McLachlan.
Joshua would like to thank his sponsors – Charles Kingsley Evans, Robinson Young, British Top Soil, Fulchers Funeral Directors, Mark Nicols – for their support so far.
Tonnar is now resting for two weeks before intense winter training gets underway. One of his main priorities during this period is to get his own boat.
