IT IS not often a team requires the use of three goalkeepers in one match but that was exactly the case for Lakenheath on Saturday following their exit from this season’s Suffolk Senior Cup.
In what was a repeat of last year’s final, the Kershaw Premier League leaders succumbed to a defeat at the hands of their Ridgeons League First Division rivals in a game that had a bit of everything.
Heath fell behind in the opening quarter of an hour thanks to Chris Williams’ 20-yard volley, before Matt Bonner diverted into his own net six minutes before the interval.
As well as conceding two goals, Heath also lost the services of goalkeeper Liam Cutts with a shoulder injury.
The second half did not start much better for the hosts with hard-working midfielder Luke Butcher receiving his marching orders after picking up a second booking.
Things took another turn for the worse for the hosts 15 minutes from time when substitute shot stopper Quinton Young was taken off after being kicked in the face, an injury he was later to receive nine stitches on.
For the last quarter of an hour, substitute centre-forward Gavin Peacock deputised between the posts.
Despite a late push, and not conceding any further goals, the damage had already been done by Ruel Fox’s men.
“It was a cracking game but they deserved to win,” said Lakenheath manager Colin Vowden.
“We missed both Aaron Turner and Steve Harley up front as we never really looked like scoring. I would be very surprised if they don’t go on and win the cup.”
