Bury Town crashed out of the FA Cup to lower-league Romford in the first qualifying round on Sunday.

Missing out on the £3,000 prize money on offer, the Blues failed to score on their travels for the sixth time from six matches so far this season.

Their one defensive lapse at the other end proved to be costly as no-one reacted to a half-cleared corner and Jamie Dicks slammed home midway through the second half.

On Saturday, Needham Market threw away a 2-0 lead at Cambridge City before late strikes from Ace Howell and Sam Newson took them into the second qualifying round.

Mildenhall Town went down 3-1 at home to Wroxham to see their cup adventure come to an early end.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Thetford Town recorded their fourth win from five matches with a 3-1 triumph at Ely City to maintain their excellent start to the season.

Walsham-le-Willows’ struggles continued as they went down 4-0 at home to Wivenhoe Town, while — in the First Division — there was a 3-3 draw for Team Bury, but defeats for Needham Market Reserves and Stowmarket Town.

Bury St Edmunds’ rugby union side got their National League Division Three London and South East campaign up and running with a 43-21 triumph over Hertford, while Bury’s cricketers ended the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League season with their third consecutive victory to move off the foot of the standings.
