Bury Town lost their unbeaten away record in the Ryman League Premier Division at Grays Athletic on Wednesday night, but went down fighting.
The hosts took the lead when Jared Small got clear and fired beyond the advancing Marcus Garnham on 33 minutes.
Bury equalised after 56 minutes when John Sands latched on to a long high ball and deftly chipped the keeper.
However, parity did not last for long and the game appeared to be settled when Grays cored three times in 10 minutes.
The first was a penalty by Joao Carlos after a foul by Tom Bullard and, three minutes later, the same player chipped over Garnham.
Carlos had a second penalty, this time for handball, saved by Garnham, but Junior Baker stole in at the far post to head home the Essex outfit’s fourth.
Two goals in the dying minutes from Richard Logan and Joe Whight gave Bury hope of getting something from the game, but it was not to be

n A combination of clinical finishing and solid defence helped Bury Town earn a 3-0 success at Met Police in the Ryman Premier on Saturday.
The Blues took the lead on 24 minutes when Sands was allowed space in the box and he turned to fire low past Stuart Searle.
Two minutes before the break, Sands’ fierce volley was only parried by Searle and Shane Tolley headed home the rebound from close range to open his account for Bury.
Defences took control in the second half, but Bury made the game safe on 63 minutes when Sands ran through and slotted in from 10 yards.

n Former Bury Town goalkeeper Nick Pope has signed a three-year contract extension with Sky Bet Championship outfit Charlton Athletic. Charlton manager Chris Powell told his club’s official website: “Good young British goalkeepers are few and far between. We feel we’ve got one.”
n Left-back Ben Coker, also formerly of Bury Town, scored his first Football League goal on Saturday, but was later sent off as Southend United were pegged back in injury time and forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in their Sky Bet League Two clash at Manchester-based Bury.
