New commercial manager Michelle Banfield-Curran has vowed to banish the ‘skeletons in the closet’ at Bury Town and rebuild trust.
The Blues are in desperate need of more income and Banfield-Curran — who has two decades of experience in the leisure industry, including a spell as partnership manager at Abbeycroft Leisure — has already heard plenty of negative criticism about how the club has previously handled its commercial side, which culminated in their financial problems of almost a year ago.
However, she is taking a bullish attitude towards sorting out the issues behind the scenes to provide the Ram Meadow-based outfit with long-term prosperity.
“I know it won’t be easy and I will be getting a lot of negative responses, but I am thick-skinned and I am persistent,” said Banfield-Curran, who was appointed to the vacancy in mid-August. “Ultimately, we need to bring back trust to our clients, treat it like a professional business and talk to each other.”
She added: “Once we start getting the trust and providing professional hospitality, the word will get about that things are changing and our reputation will turn around to be positive.
“Already we have started to remove the external boards around the pitch that haven’t been paid for and started talking to our clients and, importantly, to each other.
“We need to be transparent — there is no point hiding things and our fans and clients need to be able to see the changes that are happening.”
With manager Ben Chenery operating on a shoestring budget, new income would be welcome at Bury to finance their battle against relegation from the Ryman Premier.
They are one point the wrong side of the safety line ahead of welcoming Peacehaven and Telscombe to Ram Meadow for an early-season six-pointer tomorrow (3pm).
Chairman Russell Ward said: “We have to be honest and admit we have lapsed and performed poorly within the commercial sector of the club recently, but Michelle’s fresh ideas, coupled with her refusal to be beaten, have already paid dividends.”
